Spirulina (speer-U-lee-nah) The Ultimate Superfood

The Ability to Survive the Harshest Conditions

Spirulina (speer-U-lee-nah) gets its name from its microscopic spiral shape, and this one-celled algae transfers its mighty ability to endure harsh conditions to the human body via Organic Spirulina Powder. Spirulina grows naturally in a hot, alkaline environment, and can survive where no other organism do. In fact, it thrives in challenging situations, sometimes growing and getting stronger in temperatures over 160 degrees F.

The Ultimate Superfood

Spirulina may be the ultimate superfood, providing a complete source of protein with all essential amino acids, the building blocks of protein. Organic Spirulina Powder is packed with more protein than soy, making it a great meal supplement for vegans and those with allergies.
In addition to its copper, and selenium content, Organic Spirulina Powder contains rich amounts of zinc and easily absorbable iron. Spirulina is unique because it is one of the few plant-based sources of Vitamin B12. Would you believe that Organic Spirulina Powder contains 3900% more beta-carotene than carrots? Adding Organic Spirulina Powder to juices, shakes, and smoothies gives you an arsenal of nutrients to promote healthy eyes and a strong immune system.
Just three grams of Organic Spirulina Powder possess more phytonutrients than five servings of fruits and veggies and 300 times more calcium than milk. Organic Spirulina Powder is wonderful support for those suffering from osteoporosis and for growing children. It is a low-fat alternative to calcium-fortified beverages. Spirulina has been reported to keep cholesterol levels in check and to lower blood pressure.
Organic Spirulina Powder is a powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory. It promotes the formation of red blood cells and the growth of beneficial probiotics in the digestive tract. Scientists suggest that consuming spirulina on a daily basis aids in better brain function, memory, and learning abilities. It is also reported to reverse signs of aging.

A Natural Source of Iodine

One of the most unique properties of Organic Spirulina Powder is that is a natural source of iodine and potassium iodide, which is an essential chemical element for good thyroid function. The thyroid produces hormones that regulate growth and metabolism, and iodine deficient diets have shown to lead to stunted brain development in children, mental slowness, high cholesterol, fatigue, weight gain, depression, and goiter (swelling of the thyroid). Organic Spirulina Powder is absorbed more slowly and safely than synthetic sources of iodine. Experts have reported that the iodine in spirulina powder can protect against radioactive iodine from radiation exposure.

A Super Algae

Some say that spirulina has more nutrients per gram than any other food source in the world. This blue-green algae has the characteristics of the green pigment in chlorophyll and the blue pigments in phycocyanin. Spirulina is found mostly in freshwater lakes and ponds, where it grows in an extremely clean and sterile environment because no other organisms can survive the hot, harsh conditions that it thrives in.
Spirulina has been consumed for thousands of years by the Aztec and Mayan people, as well as natives of African and Asian nations where it is still revered as a source of nutrients and medicinal healing.
Organic Spirulina Powder is highly digestible, and tastes great when mixed in smoothies and shakes with a little cacao, coconut, fruits, and other greens.

Possible Benefits

While much research is still being conducted, some of the possible health benefits of Organic Spirulina Powder may include:
  • A complete food source
  • High in easily absorbable protein
  • Contains all 9 essential amino acids
  • Rich in vitamin B12
  • May be effective in promoting healthy eyes

Suggested Usage

The recommended daily usage is 1-2 teaspoons. As with all superfood powders, listen to your body, as you may find that either a smaller or higher intake is more suitable to your body. We recommend that you start with the recommended daily amount, and, if desired, gradually increase or decrease your daily consumption.
This powder blends well with juice, rice or soy milk, and yogurt, or can be added to your favorite smoothie. It can also be mixed into your homemade energy bars. While you can add this powder to a variety of recipes, raw food enthusiasts avoid cooking or heating in order to preserve the food's nutritional value.

How to Squat

heck I even started doing them because I aint got no ass!!

481695_550831644968738_1800812012_n
Squats. It’s an exercise we are born to do! Seriously, yet many women tend to avoid it in fear of getting thunder thighs (which I actually love!) Men who don’t really know how to train don’t do it because they’re too busy working on their biceps or chest.

squat-not-squat

Just from the picture above, I know I want to be doing squats. We need to snap out of the “skinny” mindset which leads to… well, skin and bones. Squats don’t give you bigger thighs, bad choices in food that induces oestrogen production does (more on this later). For now, just trust me and SQUAT :)

baby-squat

Check out this champion baby for example! They just KNOW how to do it. So why is it that it’s so hard for us to squat properly? Our lifestyle factors play a huge part in this. We now have chairs and work around 8 hours (for some people, even 16 hours a day!) glued to the computer sitting on a chair that’s “ergonomic”, which pretty much means your body does no work in keeping your posture. Don’t get me wrong, ergonomics is important. But if we weren’t stuck in an office, we wouldn’t have to worry about it… Get what I’m saying?

Asians are an exception though (I can say this because I’m asian hehe), you can still spot them from a mile away squatting on the side of the road, usually in groups. Ok, I’ll stop there…
Squats are one of the primal movement patterns, which means we’ve been doing this movement since the beginning of time. Harvesting, gathering, cooking, eating. Kitchens and dining tables were not always around.

Most people believe squats are a lower body exercise. It is, in the sense that we move and use the muscles in the leg. However, the quads and hammies are the biggest muscles in the body and it produces testosterone that pumps through your entire body. You’ll find that after doing body weight squats for a minute your heart is already pumping, whereas doing bicep curls (without weights) won’t do much. It will tone your whole body better than any single joint exercise. Hands down.
So how do we perform this magical movement that will burn fat and give you a booty to die for?

body-weight-squats-up-down-girlStart position

  1. Stand up nice and tall with your feet shoulder width apart, arms stretched out in front of you.
  2. Make sure shoulders are pulled down away from your ears and squeeze between the shoulder blade together.
  3. Take a deep breath and brace your midsection, squeeze your buttcheeks. You’re spine is nice and straight (neutral). You’re ready to go!

End position

  1. Squat down as if to sit back into a chair. (Actually having chair might help you to understand what your body needs to do).
  2. Be aware of your shoulders, keep them away from the ears, shoulder blades still squeezed, midsection braced, nice neutral spine all the way down.
  3. Your heels should be digging into the floor and bearing most of the weight.
  4. Try and go low enough to get your thighs parallel to the floor or even deeper. If this is too hard, that’s ok! Just go as deep as you can! (If you’re a beginner, don’t let your knees pass over your toes. You’re knees should be tracking directly over your toes (same direction as your foot) at all times, whether you’re a newbie or a pro)
  5. Once you’ve reached your end point, stand back up squeezing your butt and breathing out.
Main muscles used: Glutes, Quads, Hammies
Done! Squats are such a simple movement but because we have “untrained” our body out of it, it can be quite challenging at first!

Don’t give up. Persistance will pay off.

URGENT: Sell Everything, Buy… Nickels?

URGENT: Sell Everything, Buy… Nickels?
LFT Twenty million nickels.

That’s what Kyle Bass, manager of hedge fund Hayman Capital, has stored away
in a Dallas storage space.

At least that’s what he told Michael Lewis. You can find the interview in
Lewis’ book Boomerang.

“The value of the metal in a nickel is worth six point eight cents,” Bass
told Lewis. “Did you know that?”

He didn’t.

“I just bought a million dollars’ worth of them,” Bass went on. “Twenty
million nickels.”

“‘You bought twenty million nickels?’” Lewis asked.

“‘Uh-huh.”

“‘How do you buy twenty million nickels?”

“‘Actually, it’s very difficult.”

First, Bass explained, he had to call the bank and talk them into ordering 20
million nickels from the Fed.

“The bank had finally done it, but the Federal Reserve had its own
questions.

“The Fed apparently called my guy at the bank. They asked him, ‘Why do
you want all these nickels?’

“So he called me and asked, ‘Why do you want all these nickels?’ And I
said…

“I just like nickels.”

LFT Apparently, Bass isn’t alone. A lot of people ‘just
like nickels.’

According to many, it’s the closest thing we have to ‘honest money’…

And they’re buying them up by the truckload.

So we ask…

Is the nickel the perfect investment?

Nickels
Today, LFT investigates.

And if you come out convinced… you better act quick. Your last chance to back
up the truck could be approaching fast.

First, allow us to make one thing clear:

LFT Of course, hoarding nickels isn’t a new
idea…

[Already a ‘nickel bug’? Let us know: Chris@lfb.org.]

We first mentioned the idea all the way back in 2006, before it was a sparkle in any contrarian’s
eye.

But we bring it up today for one simple reason we just mentioned: Your chance
of stocking up before the nickel goes out of circulation could be running
out.

Let me explain…

LFT Since Kyle Bass spoke to Lewis, the prices of these
metals have dropped…

Upon writing, the melt value of a 1946-2014 nickel is just on the edge of
four cents. Meaning, it’s down well over a third of the price he bought them
for.

But he lost nothing.

Even though the metal value of the nickel is down, Bass didn’t really make
all that bad of an investment.

In fact, Bass didn’t lose a penny on his purchase (aside from storage costs,
of course. But we’re not suggesting you buy twenty million nickels).

Fiat money, you see, does well in deflation. Unlike gold, nickels have
government-mandated deflation protection. They’re still going to be worth five
cents no matter what.

But at the same time, due to their metal makeup, they are protected should
inflation kick in too.

Each nickel is made up of 75% copper and 25% nickel.

[Excluding some 1942-1945 nickels. Some of those dates were made with 35%
silver when nickel was sorely needed for industrial war use. But those have all
been but scooped up by collectors.]

The same factors that could driving the U.S. dollar to the floor are the same
forces that will drive these metals up.

But what if the dollar remains strong? Let’s say, in some weird twist of
fate, the economy becomes robust as ever.

Either way, it’s a win.

If the economy becomes weak, investors will migrate toward commodities to
hedge against inflation. If the economy improves, demand of the metals will
rise, boosting the prices.

But here’s the most interesting part…

Even with copper and nickel as cheap as they currently are, the metal value
is still high enough to produce losses for the Mint.

It costs the Mint about $1.62 for every 20 nickels, or 8.09 cents for each
nickel it currently produces.

Coin Production
But that wasn’t always the case…

In the early 2000s, it was profitable to create pennies and nickels. But
then, in 2006, due to rising costs of materials and labor, the coins became
unprofitable. And by 2013, the Mint was losing $105 million annually to produce
them.

LFT And the sentiment for both copper and nickel appears
bullish…

Mike Bandrowski, for example, analyst at Clarus Securities reported on
Tuesday that nickel has “imminent” upside. And it will perform strongly over the
next two years as inventory dwindles.

“We see a great opportunity for nickel in 2015,” Bandrowski said.

One reason he cites is Indonesia: A year ago, you might’ve heard, Indonesia
banned exports of raw ore last year. This cut 25-30% of nickel out of the global
supply.

And copper? It’s sitting at a five-year low. And, according to Northern
Miner, most copper analysts “are bullish that copper has some of the best supply
and demand fundamentals in the longer term, as we get through this rough patch
and the “peak copper” scenario looms large again.”

If and when nickel and copper go up, the Mint’s losses will increase
dramatically. And they’ll eventually become too ridiculous to justify further
nickel production.

LFT Point? It’s only a matter of time until the nickel
goes the way of the old pennies, quarters, dimes and half-dollars.

And it might happen much sooner than later.

“Three members of the House,” The Blaze reports, “have proposed legislation
that would require common, everyday U.S. coins to be made from U.S. steel
instead of imported copper, zinc and nickel.

“The Cents and Sensibility Act, from Reps. Steve Stivers (R-Ohio), Tim Ryan
(D-Ohio) and Pat Tiberi (R-Ohio), is aimed at saving money by ending the use of
these imported minerals to make pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters.

“This legislation is a common-sense solution to lower the cost of minting our
coins,” Stivers told the rag.

“Not only will it cost less to produce, but it will also allow us to use an
American resource — steel — that can be manufactured right here in our
backyard.”

(Side note: Our nickels are currently made from Canadian metals.)

LFT As you know, changing the metal makeup of nickels
wouldn’t be an unprecedented move, either. Not by a long shot…

Before 1964, you probably know, U.S. quarters and dimes were 90% silver.

And from 1965 to 1970, half dollars were 40% silver covering a copper-nickel
mix.

Today’s coins don’t have a lick of silver in them.

Also, prior to 1983, our pennies were made up of 95% copper and 5% zinc.

The pennies in your pocket only consist of 2.5% copper. Just enough on the
outside to make it still look like a penny.

Blame the Fed.

The consistent debasement of the dollar over the past century-plus has made
it, time and time again, too expensive to keep using the good metals. Each time,
they had to be replaced with cheaper substitutes.

Had you seen what was coming in the early ‘60s, you could’ve started hoarding
quarters and dimes while they were 90% silver — and for far above face
value.

You would’ve bought them without tax or transaction costs. And would’ve, in
very little time, made an absolute killing.

Gresham’s Law states that good money will be hoarded whenever bad money
showers the market. Well, right now, the nickel is as good as it gets.

And soon, we suspect, it will be replaced by a cheap substitute like steel
too.

Or cut out altogether.

If you
have some storage room in your house (just don’t break through the floor), this
creates a unique opportunity for you.
Before I show you three inventive ways to get your nickel on, you might
remember the last time we mentioned this investment strategy…

LFT If you’re a really long-time reader of LFT, you
might’ve once known this letter as Whiskey and Gunpowder…

[Do you go that far back? Let us know: Chris@lfb.org.]

If so, you may also remember when the astute Gary Gibson, your trusty editor
at the time, helped to create a video about nickels.

Everything in the video (aside from the price of metals) still rings
true.

If you wish, grab some popcorn and dim the lights.

It’s movie time…

LFT “A huge opportunity to hedge against both inflation
and deflation is lying out there in the open,”
Gary Gibson wrote in the
pages of Whiskey and Gunpowder.

“Again, there is currently no transaction cost to saving in nickels and no
risk from plummeting metal prices. There is literally nothing (in case of
deflation) to lose and everything (in case of inflation) to gain.

“Your only real problem is storage; a few thousand dollars of nickels takes
up a lot of space…and it’s heavy. But people had the same problem with silver
when it was cheap.

“I doubt they’re complaining now,” Gary pointed out.

“Having ‘too much’ cupronickel won’t seem like much of a problem if inflation
continues to drive the cupronickel in five-cent pieces far in excess of face
value.

“At worse, the dollar strengthens and you’ve just saved money. That is not a
bad worse case scenario at all.

“The cupronickel is the last bit of honest U.S. currency there is. Right now
it’s dying slow, like the others did.

“But things could speed up quick”

So how can you get your hands on a bunch of nickels before it’s too late?

LFTHere are some tips on how to stack up those
nickels…

ONE: The most obvious place to get your
nickels is at your bank.

Every time you visit the bank, buy some nickels. Ask them how many rolls you
can buy without getting charged.

(As a side strategy, courtesy of the MakinBacon blog, ask for new “wrapped”
rolls. You could find some nickels in those rolls with minting errors.
Collectors eat those things up. And they’ll pay you a good return on your
(non)investment.)

If you’re a business owner, you’ll have no problems buying nickels from
commercial banks.

TWO: Go to your local casino, if gambling is
legal in your state.

It probably has nickel slots. Bring in a big container and ask to buy some
nickels. If they haven’t reverted to completely digital, you could find yourself
in the money.

THREE: Stop at local businesses.

“I’ve managed a number of businesses through the years,” one blogger, called
MakinBacon writes on his blog, “and at the end of the day we always had rolls of
coins that have to be dropped off at the bank. It could make sense to talk
managers of stores in order to have another outlet to acquire coins.

“I think this is one many people wouldn’t think of.

“Remember, all of this works great as long as the new nickels aren’t released
into circulation. Once that happens, you will have the same problems you have
with pennies; the need to sift through them to find those with the metal
content.”

How to Make a No Dig Bed

featured image
Understand How To Make A No Dig Bed
One of the most immediately striking ways in terms of practical activity that permaculture gardening differs from common gardening and agricultural practices is that it emphasizes, wherever possible, leaving the soil undisturbed. In most cultivation techniques, tilling, Ploughing or turning the soil is a common practice, but permaculture recognizes that doing so upsets the complex ecosystem that exists in soils, involving the plants that grow in them and the organisms that live within them.
As in many aspects of permaculture design, we can see the template for the no-dig garden in nature. Natural ecosystems rarely feature an element that digs the ground, yet plants still thrive in many systems. Take a deciduous forest, for example. As leaves fall from the trees they form a ‘carpet’ on the ground, disturbed only perhaps by the rooting of animals and the efforts of the wind. Nothing other than plant roots digs down into the ground. Yet seeds germinate and establish new plants and the forest system flourishes – with no digging.
Permaculture gardeners can design to replicate this natural system, by instituting a no-dig garden bed. This is a planting bed that is layered with organic material, rather than soil, in such as way that it does not require digging. Vegetables and fruits are planted into the layered material and are able to access the nutrients they need. The labor required to maintain a no-dig bed is minimal, saving the gardener time and energy. Establishing a no-dig bed is pretty easy and can be done in almost any location.

Select Location
Ideally, you would build a no-dig bed on a piece of earth or grass, but they can also be constructed on concrete, so are feasible growing options for those gardeners with, say, just a courtyard at their disposal. As your no-dig garden bed will typically be used to grow fruit and vegetables, it needs to be sited somewhere that gets a good amount of sunshine, ideally no less than six hours a day. In very hot climates you might prefer partial shade so the plants don’t overheat, but generally the more sun your no-dig bed receives the better. You might also consider orientating your bed north to south, so that the maximum number of plants get the maximum amount of sunshine as the sun moves across the sky during the day. You want to avoid a site that slopes too much as this can cause the bed to ‘creep’ and moisture to run from the higher part to the lower, depriving the plants at the top of moisture and potentially causing waterlogging at the bottom.

Prepare Site
If you prefer you can build your no-dig bed as a raised bed, using recycled materials like boards and bricks to create a frame for the organic material inside. But you can also simple institute the bed directly onto the ground. If you are making your no-dig bed on grass or soil water the surface well before starting to construct it. It you are building on concrete or similarly hard surface it is advisable to place a layer, approximately 4 inches deep, of dry sticks and leaves, in order to assist drainage.

Bottom Layer
The bottom layer (or technically second-bottom layer if constructing on concrete) will comprise newspaper and/or cardboard. Make sure there are no glossy pages in the newspaper you are going to be use, and do not use any cardboard that has a plastic coating. Both these forms contain toxins that you do not want to introduce into your garden bed. If using newspaper, layer sheets to a thickness of around half a centimeter; if using cardboard, a couple of layers will suffice. This layer is primarily there to suppress weed growth, so make sure your sheets overlap to stop the weeds getting through. Water well.

Straw Layer
The next layer should be made from straw. Lucerne straw is a good option if you can source it organically, as it has a night concentration of nitrogen, which is essential for robust plant growth. However, pea straw can also be used as is typically more readily available. Avoid using hay for this layer, as it will likely contain seeds that can germinate in your no-dig bed. Make a layer of around 10 centimeters deep and water the straw well.

Compost Layer
Over the top of the straw layer is where you will place the most organically rich material. Depending on what you have available this could comprise organic compost, a mixture of soil and compost, manure from your chickens, kitchen scraps or worm castings from a worm farm. You could use all of them, if you like.
This layer should be around 5 centimeters deep and, like the previous layers, needs to be well watered when complete. Keep some compost mixture aside for your planting holes. Obviously, using the measurements above might not bring the no-dig bed up to the level you want (for instance, you may want a higher bed to avoid bending over when it comes to harvesting), but rather than making thicker layers, repeat the layers, straw and compost, using the same proportions, until you have the desired height.

Top Layer
However many layers you institute in your no-dig bed, the top layer should always be straw. This acts as a mulch to keep weeds down and to retain moisture within the bed. Again water this layer when it is laid.

Make Planting Holes
Having completed the layering of your garden bed, it’s time to plant. Make holes in the top layer of straw not quite down to the underlying compost layer. Fill the holes with some of your compost mixture, and plant your seeds, seedlings or plants. (Space your holes according to the space required by the mature versions of your preferred species, but consider integrated planting to maximize yield from the bed. Also, think about companion planting to give benefits to your vegetables and fruits, such as shade plants or insect attractors as required.) Water the plantings well.

Maintain
Over time the layers of the no-dig bed will break down as decomposition takes place. To keep your plants provided with nutrients, add layers of compost and straw as the previous layers break down. You can also add a deeper layer of straw to the top if weeds or moisture retention become a problem. The straw should keep the bed moist, but make regular checks and irrigate if the bed dries out.

6 Top alkaline foods to eat every day for vibrant health

alkaline-food-chart

The typical American diet is a deadly one, consisting primarily of toxic and acid-forming foods like processed sugars, artificial sweeteners, refined grains, conventionally produced meats and dairy, and hidden genetically modified organisms. All this, combined with a plethora of other challenging environmental factors (such as lack of rest, psychological stress, and pharmaceutical drugs), mean it’s no wonder that more and more people are being diagnosed with chronic, degenerative illnesses or otherwise deadly conditions for which modern conventional medicine claims to have no known cure.

One of the basic underlying problems with this unsustainable lifestyle – and there are many – is the average consumer’s lack of understanding that the body must balance the blood’s pH levels at a slightly alkaline level of 7.365 in order to survive. When a person ingests food to “burn” for fuel, the digestive and metabolic process transforms it into a kind of ash which is either acidic or alkaline. The laws of modern biochemistry further explain that it is not the organic matter of foods (whether the food itself is acidic or alkaline), but their inorganic matter (such as calcium, magnesium, potassium, sodium, sulfur, phosphorous; that is, how they break down in our bodies), that determines either the acidity or alkalinity of this ashy residue.

For this reason, and because all foods in nature contain both acid and alkaline-forming elements according to the Conscious Living Center, balance is either achieved or thwarted as a direct result of the foods we choose to eat. Too many acid-forming foods can have dire consequences for our health, with “acidosis” being a common diagnosis in diabetics, for example. This is because when the nutrients required to maintain this slightly alkaline state cannot be obtained from food, the body will instead draw from its own stores, like the bones or other vital tissues – damaging its ability to repair itself and detoxify heavy metals, thereby making a person more vulnerable to fatigue and illness. And the margin for error is small. Even an only slightly acidic pH of 6.9 can actually lead to coma and death.
Of course, the ultimate goal is balance. Eating too many alkalizing foods can lead to its own fair share of complications over time, but the risk of this is seemingly less likely, given the current sorry state of today’s highly addictive consumerist diet. To combat the effects of such a diet, here are six of the most alkaline-forming foods to work into your everyday meals:

1. Root vegetables

Due to the healing “yang” nature of these foods in traditional Chinese medicine, and their tendency to be more rich in minerals than many other vegetables, it may be safe to say that you can’t get enough of them. Look for radishes especially (black, red or white), as well as beets, carrots, turnips, horseradish and rutabaga. Ready to eat after steaming for just 15-20 minutes, root vegetables will help you feel both satiated and better grounded.

2. Cruciferous vegetables

These are the veggies we all know and love, made even more delicious with just a small amount of healthy, homemade sauce like pesto. Choose from broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts and the like.

3. Leafy greens

These include kale, Swiss chard, turnip greens and spinach – of which spinach may in fact be the best pick. Known especially for its rich vitamin K and folate content, spinach is also packed with vitamins, minerals, phytochemicals, antioxidants and fiber, helping to improve digestion and even vision.

4. Garlic

A true miracle food, garlic appears at the top of innumerable lists of foods that encourage overall health, and alkaline-forming food is no exception. Among its other benefits are its ability to promote cardiovascular and immune health by lowering blood pressure, cleansing the liver and fighting off disease.

5. Cayenne peppers (capsicum)

As part of a family of potent, tropical peppers which contain enzymes essential to endocrine function, cayenne is among the most alkalizing foods. It is known for its antibacterial properties and is a rich supply of vitamin A, making it a helpful agent in fighting off the harmful free radicals that lead to stress and illness.

6. Lemons

Lemons may be the most alkalizing food of all. As a natural disinfectant, it can heal wounds while also providing potent and immediate relief for hyperacidity and virus-related conditions, as well as coughs, colds, flu and heartburn. Lemon also works to energize the liver and promote detoxification.
So it can’t hurt to think twice about what’s on your plate at your next meal, but not doing so might. Just applying that age-old motherly advice to “eat your vegetables” can be a solid first step in achieving better health.
