Deter Fleas and Open Bronchial Passages with this Potent Herb

This member of the mint family has been cultivated for centuries and its
merits have been written about by the likes of Pliny, Dioscorides and one of the
original botanists, Linnaeus.
There are two varieties of the herb, both an American and English version.
Though somewhat different in their appearance, both varieties offer similar
benefits.

Like most herbs, pennyroyal’s traditional uses range from easing headaches to
curing the common cold and was often cited by Anglo-Saxon and Welsh medical
books for its many applications.

Similar to other members of the mint family, the leaves are highly aromatic,
though not as sweet smelling as those of peppermint or spearmint. Often,
pennyroyal’s leaves are infused into a tea and studies show that the menthol
component (pulegone) in the leaves often act as an antihistamine and can help
clear nasal and bronchial passages.

Throughout history pennyroyal tea was used to quell digestive troubles,
reducing instances of flatulence in particular. It was also applied topically to
wounds, cold sores, eczema and other rash-like conditions.

One of its main uses, however, was to aid in female menstruation by helping
to induce delayed or irregular cycles. Because of its highly potent and often
unpredictable effects on the uterus, pregnant women need to use extreme caution
when ingesting the herb as it can easily lead to miscarriage.

Today, the herb needs to be used with care as there have been reported cases
of toxicity in high doses. When ingesting pennyroyal tea, special consideration
needs to be taken as to the dosage and should only be consumed for five days at
a time as it may have a toxic effect on the liver and other internal organs if
used for prolonged periods. A professional herbalist can prepare an herbal blend
that is safe to consume.

There are, however, other ways in which you (and your dog) can benefit from
this complex herb. Dried pennyroyal leaves are a proven flea deterrent. Sprinkle
them around your pet’s bedding or crates to keep the pests at bay. A few leaves
can also be wrapped
dog

around Fido’s collar if you are going to be out hiking.

And keep a few stems handy yourself as they will keep the gnats from
swarming. You can also prepare an infusion to apply topically or sprinkle around
outdoor seating areas to allow for outdoor entertaining without the unwanted
guests. And pennyroyal will also keep your garden growing strong as it often
deters burrowing insects from attacking your beds.

Essiac Tea_Immune stimulant_Anti-cancer_Elliminate toxins_Protect organs_Purifies blood

HEALTH TIP: Back in 1922, a Canadian nurse named Rene Caisse noticed some scar tissue on the breast of an elderly woman. The woman told her that doctors had diagnosed her with breast cancer years before. However, the woman didn’t want to risk surgery, nor did she have the money for it. Providentially, she had met an Ojibway Indian medicine man who told her that he could cure her cancer with an herbal tea. The woman proceeded to tell Caisse about the ingredients in the tea. About a year later, Caisse was walking beside a retired doctor who pointed to a common weed and stated, “Nurse Caisse, if people would use this weed there would be little or no cancer in the world.” This “weed” (sheep sorrel) was one of the herbs in the medicine man’s formula. The doctor had watched his horse cure itself of cancer by repeatedly grazing in a particular part of the pasture where sheep sorrel grew.

In 1924, Caisse wanted to test the tea on her aunt who had been diagnosed with terminal stomach cancer and was given less than six months to live. Caisse asked the physician, Dr. R. O. Fisher, for permission to try the tea on her aunt, and he consented. Her aunt drank the herbal tea daily for two months and recovered. Amazingly, she lived for 20 more years! Caisse also tested the tea on her mother who had been diagnosed with terminal liver cancer and had been given less than two months to live. Remarkably, her mother lived another 18 years!

What was in the tea? Well, technically, Essiac Tea is not a tea, rather it is a decoction of herbs, since the herbs are boiled and then steeped for several hours. In order to be true Essiac it must always contain the four essential herbs: Burdock Root, Sheep Sorrel, Slippery Elm Bark, and Turkish Rhubarb Root. She named the tea “ESSIAC” (which is Caisse spelled backwards). Essiac Tea is now used all over the world by cancer patients who want to avoid chemo and radiation. My own grandmother lived for over a decade with “terminal” cancer and her primary daily treatment was Essiac tea.

Telling God your name.

Looking and reading the book of Jubilees . A lot of missing history from the
King James. Explains how we got into the idolatry we now have mingled it in our
lives. Mixed in our habits and traditions. Time to reevaluate what's really
important. To walk in obedience to God or wallow In stupidity and continue down
the road of doom. I choose to be obedient and wake up to my sins. Change them as
God and Yeshua tells me.YHVH. Learning a lot Lord. Thank you. Praise your holy
name. Jehovah Elohim.

Telling God your name...

Further
thoughts on Parashat Vayishlach ~ by John J. Parsons

www.hebrew4christians.com

Some people
make it the business of theology to know God's Name, but God begins by first
asking for ours instead... Recall that Jacob had disguised who he really was in
the hope of obtaining the blessing (Gen. 27), though his duplicity forced him
into an exile that lasted until he was finally willing to be honest with
himself. And like Jacob, each of us must answer God's question: "What is your
name?" (Gen. 32:27). When we "wrestle through" this question to face who we
really are, we encounter God and find our blessing, that is, our true name and
identity. Each of us has to go through the process of being renamed from
"manipulator" (i.e., Yaakov) to "one in whom God rules" (i.e., Israel). But note
the order: it is only when we "tell God our name," that is, own who we really
are, that He meets with us "face to face" at Peniel (Gen. 32:30). You will not
be able to say, "I will not let you go unless you bless me," until you are
willing tell God your name (Gen. 32:26-27).

I should add that while
"telling God your name" can be painful and even frightening, it is not the last
word about who you really are. We are faced with an inner dualism as we struggle
to take account of our lives. On the one hand, we need to confess the truth of
our radical sinfulness, our depravity, our brokenness, and so on, while on the
other we must endure ourselves and find faith that God's blessing nevertheless
belongs to us, and that Yeshua gave his life for us and loves us -- despite
ourselves. We have to be willing to take God's new name for us and believe that
God will transform our inner nature for eternal good. We have to be renamed from
Yaakov to Israel, and yet we know ourselves as both.

Note: Some
people may need help learning to "endure themselves." Many are able, it seems,
to receive the hope that they are forgiven for their past sins, but they are
subsequently scandalized by encountering their own inner struggles, and they
eventually despair over their ongoing weakness... Tragically, some are even
tempted to regard the warfare within the heart as a sign of being devoid of all
saving grace! We must remember, however, that there is a real struggle between
the desires of the flesh and the desires of the Spirit (Gal. 5:17). We must
never move away from simple trust in the message of God's unconditional love
demonstrated at the cross; we must never seek to legitimize our place in God's
heart. When we walk by the Spirit, we are no longer under the law (Gal. 5:18),
which is to say, we no longer need to justify ourselves but instead trust in
God's power to transform us. Just as we are saved by the love of God, so are we
changed, so do we grow...

Super Cider. Also called Master Tonic and Supertonic.

This formula is said to help ward off colds, flu and even the plague, but it also adds a nice zip to soup and salad dressing. It’s essentially just a wonderfully flavorful vinegar that is packed full of excellent micronutrients as well.

This recipe is pretty easy to put together – equal parts of all the ingredients except for the apple cider vinegar. I stick these all through my food processor on shred. Or chop.
These ingredients should be as fresh as possible and preferably organic. Use dried herbs only in an emergency.

Raw apple cider vinegar (organic)
1 Part fresh chopped garlic cloves
1 part fresh chopped white/yellow onion
1 part fresh chopped hot peppers such as habanero, cayenne, jalapeno (I use jalapeno)
1 part fresh grated ginger root
1 part fresh grated horseradish

Fill a glass jar 3/4 of the way full w/equal parts by volume of the above chopped and grated ingredients. Then fill the jar with the raw vinegar with the "mother.". Close and shake vigorously and then top off the vinegar if it is necessary. Keep in a dark cabinet.

Shake or stir once a day for at least two weeks, (You can tincture longer) then filter the mixture through a clean cloth or fine meshed strainer. Compost the leftovers. this tonic originated from Dr. Richard Schutze. The tonic is extremely powerful as it comes from all fresh ingredients. It is touted as a modern day plague tonic. Don’t underestimate it’s power. I would start slowly, only taking a little bit from the tincture bottle, especially if you want to give it to your kids.

Regular dosage is 1/2 to 1 oz. once, twice or more times a day (you can dilute with water if you feel it is too strong).

I like to use 5 ounces Apple Cider-5 ounces water, 1 oz of this Super Cider- 1/2 oz Echinacea and a dropper of Nasturtium Tincture as a weekly immune booster.

Dollar Store Crafts | How to Make a Mason Jar Solar
Lamp
Spring is right around the corner, and that means it’s time for grilling
and patio parties (yay!). How you light your get together can really set the
mood and bring the party to life! We have been doing some amazing mason jar
crafts recently and have a couple jars left over, so we decided to experiment
with some mason jar lighting. Plus, the dollar store just started selling the
solar lights that you can stick in the ground around your patio.
In this tutorial we are going to show you how to make your own solar light
with a mason jar. This is an inexpensive and easy way to add charm to any
outdoor space.
Let’s get started.

How to Make Mason Jar Solar Lights:

Supplies:

  • Solar light (the stake kind) $1 each at Dollar Tree
  • Mason Jar with lid
  • Some sticky foam tape
Supplies: Solar Lights, Mason Jars, Foam tape

Supplies:

Solar Lights, Mason Jars, Foam
tape

Step 1:

Start by removing the stake part of the light. It should just slide right
off. You’ll be left with the solar panel and light component. We kept the
plastic casing around the LED.
Remove the stake piece of the solar lights so you are left with the top solar panel piece.

Remove the stake piece of the solar lights so you are
left with the top solar panel piece.
We kept the plastic casing around the light because it has a metal reflector that helps intensify the brightness of the lamp.

lamp.

Step 2:

Grab the jar and unscrew the lid. Remove the flat part of the lid and just
keep the ring. The top part of the solar light should slide through the ring
nicely with a little bit of snugness. In order to make sure the light doesn’t
fall down into the jar, you’ll need to put the foam tape around the top of the
light. This will keep it snug.
Remove the lid from your jar.

Remove the lid from your jar.
Wrap the foam tape around the solar light.

Wrap the foam tape around the solar
light.

Step 3:

Once you’ve put a single layer of tape around the light, slide the light
back into the ring until the top of the solar panel is flush with the top of the
lid.
Squeeze the light into the center of the lid so it's mostly flush with the top of the jar.

Squeeze the light into the center of the lid so it’s
mostly flush with the top of the jar.

Step 4:

Screw the lid onto the jar and enjoy your new solar light!
Your first solar light is complete!

Food Additives: Protect Your Family From Cancer-Causing Chemicals

There are more than 3000 different food additives that are purposefully
added to our food supply. Some of them are known to cause cancer!

How is this possible?

Even though the Delaney Clause of the 1958 Food Additives Amendment states that any additives shown to cause cancer in humans or animals are not permitted to be added to our food, political pressure has caused the FDA to relax these standards and allow “small amounts” of cancer causing substances to be used in foods.

But that’s not the worst of it…

Not only are known carcinogens allowed in your food, but certain food additives can cause allergic reactions in some people. Other additives may be harmful to certain groups of people such as pregnant women, infants, people with high blood pressure and people with kidney problems.

There’s even more bad news…

Even if all of the food additives used in our foods were safe individually, rarely does any
food have only one additive in it. Testing for additive safety has been done for
individual additives, not for combinations of additives. Additives that are safe
individually may be harmful in certain combinations. Nobody knows the effects of
the many different additives used in the thousands of different combinations.

It’s enough to make you afraid to eat packaged foods of any kind.

How can you protect you and your family?

The good news is…food labels for packaged foods must list the ingredients. The
not-so-good news is that finding the ingredients on the label and being able to
read them can be a challenge. They’re often hidden under a flap of packaging
material in very tiny print, barely readable without a magnifying glass.

And many of the ingredients have extremely long and complicated names like
ethyl methyl phenylglycidate or ferric sodium pyrophosphate. Words that don’t
mean anything to anyone unless they have a chemistry degree. So even if you pull
out your magnifying glass and read the small print, it still wouldn’t do you any
good.

Here’s something else to watch out for…“stealth” listing of the ingredients.
Often the package has statements like "NATURAL FRUIT FLAVORS, with Real Fruit
Juice," or ALL NATURAL INGREDIENTS and NO PRESERVATIVES ADDED. This does not
mean there are no harmful additives in the product. There very well could be. By
using these words, the manufacturer hopes you'll think these are healthy,
natural products and buy them.

The easiest way to protect yourself and your family is to know how to read
the labels and what it means as far as your health is concerned. You don’t need
a college education to do that. Nor do you need to do hundreds of hours of
research. All you need is…
FOOD ADDITIVES: A Shopper’s Guide To What’s Safe And What’s
Not.

The “Rosetta Stone” of Food
Label Gobbledygook

Just like the Rosetta Stone enabled historians to translate Egyptian hieroglyphics, FOOD ADDITIVES: A Shopper’s Guide To What’s Safe And What’s Not enables you to translate the mind-boggling, scientific chemical names of food additives into a simple rating system so that you know what’s safe and what isn’t. It’s small booklet that you can carry in a purse or pocket when you go to the grocery store. You can read the list of ingredients and compare each additive with the additives listed in this book—before you buy.

A Good Rule of Thumb

If the list of ingredients is long, there's probably a lot of chemical additives in the product. It’s best to avoid these foods because of the unknown health effects of combinations of food additives.

If the list of ingredients is short, it may or may not have harmful additives in it.
Look it up in FOOD ADDITIVES: A Shopper’s Guide To What’s Safe And What’s Not
before you decide to purchase it.

Ingredients are listed on the label in order of predominance by weight...the
ingredient that weighs the most is listed first, the ingredient that weighs the
least is listed last. If there’s a questionable additive on the list, the closer
it is to the front of the list, the more you put yourself at risk.

Food Additive Safety Codes

The following codes indicate the safety of the additives in the table below. Many additives
have more than one code used to describe their safety.

* GRAS - Generally Recognized As Safe by the FDA.
§ FDA approved colorant
S There is no known toxicity. The additive appears to be
safe.
A The additive may cause allergic reactions.
C Caution is advised. The additive may be unsafe, poorly tested,
or used in foods we eat too much of.
C1 Caution is advised for certain groups in the population, such
as pregnant women, infants, persons with high blood pressure, kidney problems,
etc.
X The additive is unsafe or very poorly
tested.

Microwave Oven Destroys The Nutritional Value Of Your Food

The rise of widespread nutritional deficiencies in the western world
correlates almost perfectly with the introduction of the microwave oven. This is
no coincidence. Microwave ovens heat food through a process of creating
molecular friction, but this same molecular friction quickly destroys the
delicate molecules of vitamins and phytonutrients (plant medicines) naturally
found in foods. One study showed that microwaving vegetables destroys up to 97%
of the nutritional content (vitamins and other plant-based nutrients that
prevent disease, boost immune function and enhance health).

In other
words, eating raw broccoli provides you with natural anti-cancer medicine that's
extremely effective at halting the growth of cancer tumors. But microwaving that
broccoli destroys the anti-cancer nutrients, rendering the food "dead" and
nutritionally depleted. There's even some evidence to suggest that microwaving
destroys the natural harmony in water molecules, creating an energetic pattern
of chaos in the water found in all foods. In fact, the common term of "nuking"
your food is coincidentally appropriate: Using a microwave is a bit like
dropping a nuclear bomb on your food, then eating the fallout. (You don't
actually get radiation from eating microwaved foods, however. But you don't get
much nutrition, either.)

Are  Microwave  Users  Unhealthy?

Consumers are dying today in part because they
continue to eat dead foods that are killed in the microwave. They take a
perfectly healthy piece of raw food, loaded with vitamins and natural medicines,
then nuke it in the microwave and destroy most of its nutrition. Humans are the
only animals on the planet who destroy the nutritional value of their food
before eating it. All other animals consume food in its natural, unprocessed
state, but humans actually go out of their way to render food nutritionally
worthless before eating it. No wonder humans are the least healthy mammals on
the planet.

The invention of the microwave and its mass adoption by the
population coincides with the onset of obesity in developed nations around the
world. Not only did the microwave make it convenient to eat more
obesity-promoting foods, it also destroyed much of the nutritional content of
those foods, leaving consumers in an ongoing state of malnourished overfeeding.
In other words, people eat too many calories but not enough real
nutrition
. The result is, of course, what we see today: Epidemic rates of
diabetes, cancer, heart disease, depression, kidney failure, liver disorders and
much more. These diseases are all caused by a combination of malnutrition and
exposure to toxic chemicals (plus other factors such as emotional trauma, lack
of exercise, etc.). Microwaves make malnutrition virtually automatic, and being
exposed to toxic chemicals is easy to accomplish by simply eating processed
foods (which are universally manufactured with the addition of toxic chemicals
that act as preservatives, colorings, flavor enhancers and so
on).

Microwaving is, technically, a form of food irradiation. I find it
interesting that people who say that would never eat "irradiated" food have no
hesitation about microwaving their food. It's the same thing (just a different
wavelength of radiation). In fact, microwaves were originally called "radar
ranges." Sounds strange today, doesn't it? But when microwaves were first
introduced in the 1970's, they were proudly advertised as radar ranges. You
blast your food with high-intensity radar and it gets hot. This was seen as some
sort of space-age miracle in the 1970's. Perhaps someday an inventor will create
a food heating device that does not radically alter the nutritional value of the
foods in the process, but I'm not holding my breath on this one.
Probably the best way to heat foods right now is to simply use a countertop
toaster oven, and keep the heat as low as possible.

The microwave does
work as advertised, by the way. It makes your food hot. But the mechanism by
which heat is produced causes internal damage to the delicate molecular
structures of vitamins and phytonutrients. Minerals are largely unaffected,
however, so you'll still get the same magnesium, calcium and zinc in microwaved
foods as you would in non-microwaved foods, but the all-important B vitamins,
anthocyanins, flavonoids and other nutritional elements are easily destroyed by
microwave ovens.

The microwave is the appliance of the living
dead
. People who use the microwave on a regular basis are walking down a
path towards degenerative disease and a lifelong battle with obesity. The more
you use the microwave, the worse your nutritional state gets, and the more
likely you are to be diagnosed with various diseases and put on pharmaceuticals
which, of course, will create other health problems that lead to a grand
spiraling nosedive of health.

Do yourself a favor: Toss your
microwave
, or donate it to some charity. It's much easier to avoid using the
microwave if you don't have one around. It will clear up counter space, save you
electricity and greatly enhance your dietary habits. When you need to heat
something, heat it in a toaster oven or a stovetop pan (avoid Teflon and
non-stick surfaces, of course). Better yet, strive to eat more of a raw,
unprocessed diet. That where you'll get the best nutrition anyway. Buy yourself
a Vita-Mix and blend up some smoothies. It's faster than microwaving foods are
far healthier.

10 Reasons To Eat More Sprouts

10 Reasons To Love Sprouts (Plus DIY Sprouting At Home)

By Michelle Cook (Care2)

Sprouts truly are the best locally-grown food, yet not enough people eat or grow them. Considering there many health and environmental benefits, it’s time to consider adding sprouts to your diet.

10 Reasons To Eat More Sprouts:

1. Experts estimate that there can be up to 100 times more enzymes in sprouts than uncooked fruits and vegetables. Enzymes are special types of proteins that act as catalysts for all your body’s functions. Extracting more vitamins, minerals, amino acids, and essential fatty acids from the foods you eat ensures that your body has the nutritional building blocks of life to ensure every process works more effectively.

2. The quality of the protein in the beans, nuts, seeds, or grains improves when it is sprouted. Proteins change during the soaking and sprouting process, improving its nutritional value. The amino acid lysine, for example, which is needed to prevent cold sores and to maintain a healthy immune system increases significantly during the sprouting process.

3. The fiber content of the beans, nuts, seeds, or grains increases substantially. Fiber is critical to weight loss. It not only binds to fats and toxins in our body to escort them out, it ensures that any fat our body breaks down is moved quickly out of the body before it can resorb through the walls of the intestines (which is the main place for nutrient absorption into the blood).

4. Vitamin content increases dramatically. This is especially true of vitamins A, B-complex, C, and E. The vitamin content of some seeds, grains, beans, or nuts increases by up to 20 times the original value within only a few days of sprouting. Research shows that during the sprouting process mung beansprouts (or just beansprouts, as they are often called) increase in vitamin B1 by up to 285 percent, vitamin B2 by up to 515 percent, and niacin by up to 256 percent.

5. Essential fatty acid content increases during the sprouting process. Most of us are deficient in these fat-burning essential fats because they are not common in our diet. Eating more sprouts is an excellent way to get more of these important nutrients.

6. During sprouting, minerals bind to protein in the seed, grain, nut, or bean, making them more useable in the body. This is true of alkaline minerals like calcium, magnesium, and others than help us to balance our body chemistry for weight loss and better health.

7. Sprouts are the ultimate locally-grown food. When you grow them yourself you are helping the environment and ensuring that you are not getting unwanted pesticides, food additives, and other harmful fat-bolstering chemicals that thwart your weight loss efforts.

8. The energy contained in the seed, grain, nut, or legume is ignited through soaking and sprouting.

9. Sprouts are alkalizing to your body. Many illnesses including cancer have been linked to excess acidity in the body.

10. Sprouts are inexpensive. People frequently use the cost of healthy foods as an excuse for not eating healthy. But, with sprouts being so cheap, there really is no excuse for not eating healthier.

How To Get Sprouting At Home!

Growing your own is a great way to have a supply of gourmet varieties, ensure access to high quality fresh foods year round if you live in a colder climate, or simply to become more aware of the food you are eating.

I prefer the jar method which involves using a wide-mouth mason jar and either sprout lids from a health food store or cheesecloth and a rubber band.

You’ll need only a few basic supplies to get started sprouting. They include: organic sprouting seeds, nuts, legumes, or grains (such as mung beans, alfalfa seeds, clover seeds, broccoli seeds, and garbanzo beans.)

Avoid sprouting kidney beans as they are poisonous if eaten raw or sprouted. Make sure the seeds you choose are from a reputable supplier that can guarantee they haven’t been heated during processing, which prevents them from sprouting.

What You’ll Need:

1. Large wide mouth mason jars

2. Sprouting lids for jars (Sprouting lids are typically available in most health food stores but you can use cheesecloth and rubber bands over the top of the jars if you prefer)

Now you’re ready to get sprouting! :-)

Grow Your Own Sprouts

  • For hygiene’s sake, wash your hands before handling seeds. Use seeds, grains, nuts, or legumes. For simplicity, I’ll be referring to any of these items as seeds throughout the instructions.
  • Remove any broken or discolored seeds, stones, twigs, or hulls that may have found their way into your sprouting seeds.
  • Place one type of seed in the jar. Use about a teaspoon of seeds or one-third cup of beans. Remember they will grow in size during the soaking and sprouting process.
  • Cover the seeds with pure water. If you are using a few tablespoons of seeds, cover with at least one cup of water. If you are using beans, nuts, or grains, use at least three times the water of the amount of seed. In other words, one cup of water for one-third cup of mung beans, for example.
  • Allow the seeds to soak for about 6 to 12 hours. I find it easiest to start them before going to bed. They absorb the water while I’m sleeping and are ready to start sprouting in the morning.
  • Cover the jar with the sprouting lids or cheesecloth. If you’re using cheesecloth, secure over the top of the jar with a rubber band. Drain off the water.
  • Rinse thoroughly with fresh water and drain off the water again. Set upside down in a clean, cool spot in your kitchen area, preferably on a slight angle to allow excess water to drain off. Alternatively, use a stainless steel dish drying rack which gives the sprout jars the perfect angle for draining.
  • Rinse the sprouts a few times a day. Be sure to drain them well each time.
  • Once the sprouts are ready to be harvested (this amount of time differs for each variety; alfalfa or mung bean sprouts are ready in about a week), place them in a large bowl of cool water and stir them around to loosen hulls and skins from the seeds (this is an optional step). They’ll usually come to the top so you can remove them. Don’t worry about removing every hull. Doing so helps prevent spoilage so the sprouts will last longer. Drain sprouts well and store in the refrigerator covered for a week to 10 days, depending on the sprout type.

HANDY TIP:

To increase the mineral content of your sprouts, add a piece of kelp or other type of seaweed to the water while the seeds are soaking.

A Goat Will Keep You Alive | Farm Wars

A Goat Will Keep You Alive

Alive1Barbara H. Peterson

Farm Wars

When thinking about survival prepping, most think of collecting as
many dried foods as possible to last for as many years as possible,
along with whatever other supplies will be needed to take care of
oneself and family without having to visit the supermarket, which, in
most scenarios, will not be functioning in a post-crash world.

To this discussion, I would like to add something a bit out of the
box. And that is – a goat will keep you alive. Yes, it’s true, and I
have spent the last several weeks proving just that.

The survival system that I decided on was geared towards providing me
and mine with fresh, whole food that is renewable and sustainable. So, I
purchased two milking goats to go along with my garden. One is an
Alpine cross whom I named Sunny, and the other a Mini Mancha (La Mancha
and Nigerian Dwarf cross) who goes by the name of Fiona. They were
pregnant when I bought them, and almost ready to kid.

Alive2I
have to admit that I knew Alpines were good milkers, but had no idea
what a Mini Mancha would do, and was delightfully surprised when it came
time for milking at the amount that my little gal produces. For such a
small individual, she is a powerhouse.

So, with these two ladies by my side, I began my journey into food
freedom. Could my ladies actually keep me alive and healthy? I would
soon find out.

The Experiment

Alive3The
babies were born the first week of February, and I did not milk until I
weaned them at 2 months of age. After that, I started milking twice per
day and get 1 – 1 ½ gallons per day. Since my ladies started producing I
haven’t eaten much of anything that doesn’t come from the ranch and/or
local sources.

Why a goat?

My first thought was nutrition. Could I really get the nutrition I
need from a diet of goat milk, veggies and fruit? So, I looked up a bit
of nutritional information:

Nutrition

Goat milk is also a healthier alternative to cow milk.
Why? Cow milk has to be homogenized to be more easily digested, which
is a process where the fat globules are broken down. However, this is
not necessary with goat milk because it is naturally homogenized.
Therefore goat milk is much more easily digested than cow milk is.

Goat milk has more of the essential vitamins that we need. Goat
milk has 13% more calcium, 25% percent more B6, 47% percent more vitamin
A, and 27% more selenium. It also has more chloride, copper, manganese,
potassium, and niacin than cow milk. It also produces more silicon and
fluorine than any other dairy animal. Silicon and fluorine can help
prevent diabetes.

Scientist are not sure why, but people who are lactose intolerant
can often drink goat milk without having to worry about side effects.
Goat milk does not cause phlegm like cow milk does, so you can drink
goat milk even when you have a cold or bad allergy problems.

http://www.dairygoatjournal.com/issues/83/83-4/Daniel_Peterson.html
For a complete nutritional breakdown comparing goat milk to cow and human milk, go to Fias Co Farm.

Ease of upkeep

The next concern was how easy are they to keep? It turns out that
they are the best bet for the money when it comes to dairy critters.
Goats are less time consuming, eat less, and are less labor intensive
than cows, making them much more economical. They are also browsers and
not grazers, meaning that they will eat stuff that cows simply will not
touch, and can be used to clear weeds. If you turn them out on your
property to browse, they will eat brush and weeds, leaving you with
cleared, fertilized land, sans the heavy machinery and spendy
store-bought fertilizers. Just be careful of the weeds that they eat as the taste will end up in your milk.

Often the dairy goat has been called the “poor man’s
cow,” because good dairy goats do not cost near as much as good dairy
cows do. You can raise more goats on a smaller amount of pasture than
you can cows. While it takes an acre for a cow/calf, you can
successfully raise six goats on one acre. Cows usually have only one
calf per year, while goats have two kids (that’s what you call a young
goat) after their second year. Pound for pound a good dairy goat will
produce more milk than a cow will. Unlike a cow, a good dairy goat can
produce up to 10% of its body weight in milk.

http://www.dairygoatjournal.com/issues/83/83-4/Daniel_Peterson.html
Choosing your goat

There are several breeds to choose from, and what is right for one, might not be right for another.

The most frequently asked question that people ask me
about goats is, “What is the difference in each breed’s milk taste, and
how much milk do they average.” And that is always one of the hardest
questions to answer, simply because there really aren’t any solid
answers I can give! Each individual goat is going to have its own amount
of milk it’s going to give, and it’s going to have its own taste. Think
of it like a grab bag. You never know what you’re going to get.

But that sounds rather discouraging. How on earth is a body
supposed to choose a goat breed if they’re hesitant about each one? Over
the years, I’ve had the privilege to own almost all the dairy breeds
out there, and then try the milk from countless of other goats. Through
much experience (read: trial and error as we bought goats that gave
horrid tasting milk!), I’ve gotten to know each breed’s quirks and
histories, and I’ve come to realize that it actually is possible to give
people an idea of what to expect from each breed.

http://www.motherearthnews.com/homesteading-and-livestock/choosing-a-dairy-goat-breed.aspx#ixzz2TlWeV9xJ
Saanen, Alpine, Nubian, Toggenburg, Oberhaslis, La Mancha, Nigerian
Dwarf, and combinations thereof are the main dairy breeds. I would
rather not get hooked on buying a purebred since they are more
expensive, and certain crosses yield excellent milk, in my opinion. My
gals are both crosses and their milk is wonderful.

So, when you are looking for your milking goat, go with taste,
volume, temperament, size of teats if you are hand milking, and orifice
size. You can determine all of these things if you go to the place where
you are considering purchasing your goat and observe the hands on
experience. Watch the goats to see how they relate to each other, watch
your prospect getting milked, ask questions, and taste her milk. I
always recommend buying from a trusted source, and if in doubt, get a
vet check before purchase.

Preparing for your goat

Alive13I
asked the local goat-keeper what type of fencing my girls would need.
He said that if I can make an enclosure that would hold water, I should
be able to keep them in at all times…. Okay! A challenge. Well, I ended
up with a 52” fence because I used large pallets. So far, it has worked.
My friend uses 5’ high woven wire fencing. That is optimal, but since
the pallets were free, that is what I chose.

The feeder is outside of the pen, allowing them to put their heads
through the holes and eat without trampling it on the ground and soiling
it. Hay nets are another option, but if your goat has horns, she can
get them caught in the hay net.

Large dog houses are excellent shelters, but just about anything can
be used such as a raised camper shell, a-frame structures, etc.
Basically, your goats need to have some place dry and out of the
elements to get to. A good straw bedding inside will keep them warm, dry
and happy, and provide a good kidding area.

They will also need a good supply of fresh, clean water. Goats do not
like dirty water, and if you live in freezing conditions you will need
to get a water heater. I use 5 gallon buckets that are cleaned
regularly.

Keeping your goat healthy

Feed

You will want to get a good supply of high quality hay for your
girls. I let the babies browse the ranch, but the milking mamas get a
controlled feed so that the taste of the milk can be regulated. As I
stated before, whatever they eat affects the taste of the milk. If you
cannot get feed for your girls, they can be turned out to forage in an
emergency and will do just fine as long as there is plenty of grass and
other vegetation. Click HERE for a list of edible and poisonous plants for goats.

Each goat needs 2 to 4 pounds of hay each day,
although some of this need can be met by available pasture or other
forage. Make it available free choice throughout the day when pasture is
unavailable or feed twice a day when goats are also browsing.

You can feed alfalfa (and some grass hays) in pellet form if you
don’t have storage or if you want to mix it with grain. The goats don’t
waste so much alfalfa when it’s in pellets, and you can limit who gets
it by combining it with their grain.

http://www.dummies.com/how-to/content/what-to-feed-your-goats.html
I am currently feeding a free-choice oat/pea hay combination along with a non-GMO dairy goat pellet
, whole oats, rolled barley, alfalfa pellets, timothy grass pellets,
and molasses. They also get free-choice loose minerals and baking soda.

Worming

When it is time to worm, I mix food grade diatomaceous earth with
their grain ration along with a bit of warm water and molasses to coat
everything so that it all gets eaten. Here is some info about
diatomaceous earth:

Food grade diatomaceous earth makes a very effective
natural insecticide. The insecticidal quality of diatomaceous earth is
due to the razor sharp edges of the diatom remains. When diatomaceous
earth comes in contact with the insects, the sharp edges lacerate the
bugs waxy exoskeleton and then the powdery diatomaceous earth absorbs
the body fluids causing death from dehydration.

Food grade diatomaceous earth has been used for at least two
decades as a natural wormer for livestock. Some believe diatomaceous
earth scratches and dehydrates parasites. Some scientists believe that
diatomaceous earth is a de-ionizer or de-energizer of worms or
parasites. Regardless, people report definite control. To be most
effective, food grade diatomaceous earth must be fed long enough to
catch all newly hatching eggs or cycling of the worms through the lungs
and back to the stomach. A minimum of 60 days is suggested by many, 90
days is advised for lungworms.

Food grade diatomaceous earth works in a purely
physical/mechanical manner, not “chemical” and thus has no chemical
toxicity. Best yet, parasites don’t build up a tolerance/immunity to its
chemical reaction, so rotation of wormers is unnecessary.

Injury care

Goats are hardy creatures, so a bit of prevention goes a long way. I
keep Povidone Iodine around for minor cuts, along with hydrogen peroxide
and colloidal silver. My medical kit is stocked with sterile cotton,
vet-wrap, sharp scissors, an enema bottle, small bottles of hydrogen
peroxide, colloidal silver and Betadine, cotton swabs, thermometer, and
small towels.

Trimming feet

Your milking stand can also be used to secure your goats for hoof trimming.

Alive12Comprehensive instructions along with pictures can be found by clicking HERE.
Also, remember to keep a bottle of blood-stop powder handy just in case
you trim a little too deep and draw blood. If this happens, simply
sprinkle a bit on, and that will stop the bleeding.

To horn or not to horn

Most goat people will insist on disbudding the babies. I don’t. I
know that this is a contentious subject, but clearly, goats are born
with them and they serve a purpose. We disbud (remove) them for our own
personal convenience, not theirs. The choice is yours, as I have already
made mine. Here is an article that supports my belief:

Yes, horns get in the way. Yes, they can cause some
damage. But did you know that in most countries, disbudding is
considered akin to surgically removing a leg, or ears, or an udder? And
well it should be, in my book. That said, goat owners have to take
their individual circumstances into consideration. Maybe, if I had a lot
of little kids around, I might think differently. But I would probably
just do what I did when my kids were little and there were sharp pointy
goat horns around: put tennis balls, or some sort of rubber, squishy
thing, on the end of the horns.Worked great. Goats didn’t care. No eyes
got poked out.  If I had a bajillion goats in a small space, maybe I
would disbud. If I was going to show my goats, I’d have to – it’s THE
LAW. Hmmm. Im not showing. In my particular case, I’m willing to make
management changes in order to let my goats be goats.

Milking

A happy goat is a good milking goat. At first arrival to a new home,
your goat will take some time to get used to her surroundings. Since
they are herd animals, they like company. So, a compatible goat buddy is
better for your goat than being the lone stranger.

Goats can hold back their milk of they are unhappy, and if they are
satisfied, can deliver it easily. It is really up to them. This means
that developing a good relationship with them is paramount. When I
started milking my mamas, I sang to them. Now that we are in a routine,
and they love routines, I open the gate and they run to the milking
stand. This took a bit of doing.

At first, Fiona didn’t want to get on. She hadn’t been milked on a
stand before and would have none of it. I had to lift her up and place
her on it. Well, that wasn’t going to last for long, so I started only
giving them grain when they were on the stand. Problem solved.  They now
associate the stand with grain, and the longer I milk, the more grain
they get to eat, so they give me as much milk as possible.

Click HERE for detailed instructions on how to hand milk a goat. I like to use a mild solution of warm water and apple cider vinegar for an udder wash and teat dip.

Alive5If
you have more than a couple of goats, and you will after kidding, you
might want to invest in a milking machine. I invested in an aspirator
purchased from an eBay seller for $109, some hose for $25, a couple of
replacement batteries for $25, two fittings, a dosing syringe, and a
gallon jar with lid that I had around the house. My friend had already
made one, so she put the fittings and hose together for me, and showed
me how to use it.

The main thing to remember about goat milk is that it will pick up
the flavor of anything it comes in contact with. Therefore, cleanliness
will yield the best tasting milk. Also, I don’t let my milk come in
contact with plastic containers. I use a stainless steel bucket and
glass jars. Immediately after milking, I strain the milk into a glass
jar and place it in the fridge to cool. No “goaty” taste for me! People
who taste my milk say it tastes like creamy, sweet cow’s milk. They
can’t tell it’s from a goat.

Food  and other stuff

When I say that a goat will keep you alive, I mean it. Here is a typical day’s meal:

Alive6Breakfast:

Goat milk smoothie – goat milk, whatever fruit is handy and honey
placed in a blender and blended until smooth and creamy, or goat milk
and homemade granola made with oats, fruit and nuts.

Alive7Lunch:

Goat cheese and spinach salad.

Alive8Dinner:

Vegetable soup and homemade bread made with whey from the cheesemaking process.

Alive9Snack:

Goat ice-milk mixed with fruit, nuts, and any other flavors you like.

Here are pics of a couple of the cheeses that I make with stuff from the garden, goat milk and apple cider vinegar.

Alive10Walking Onion Goat Cheese

Alive11Wild Celery Goat Cheese

I also feed the whey and excess milk to the cats and chickens. It keeps them fat and healthy.

You can also make a very mild and gentle soap from goat milk.

Packing

Goats are also used for packing, and will leave a much more invisible footprint than other animals such as donkeys and horses.

Conclusion

The results of my experiment are that I am feeling strong, energetic,
am definitely healthy, and do not feel one bit deprived. And what do I
owe it to? My two milking mamas, fresh fruit, veggies, local honey and a
penchant for independence. I am confident that if the store shelves run
dry, I can still eat healthy, good tasting food and get the nutrition
that I need. A goat will keep you alive.
